Armed 18-Year-Old Apprehended Near U.S. Capitol

A serious security threat unfolded at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday afternoon. An 18-year-old man was taken into custody near the historic building. He was armed with a loaded shotgun and running toward the complex.

The incident began just after noon. The suspect arrived in a white Mercedes SUV. He parked the vehicle abruptly in the area. Witnesses saw him exit the car with a weapon in hand. He immediately started sprinting toward the U.S. Capitol building.

Police Response and Quick Apprehension

Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan spoke at a press conference later that day. He detailed the rapid response of his officers. Officers on guard spotted the man right away. They drew their weapons and issued loud commands.

The officers ordered the young man to drop his shotgun. Fortunately, the suspect did not resist the police orders. “He immediately complied,” Chief Sullivan told the gathered reporters. The man dropped the weapon and laid on the ground. Officers moved in quickly to secure him in handcuffs.

Dangerous Gear Recovered from Suspect

The investigation revealed a deeply concerning amount of tactical gear. The suspect was wearing a tactical vest and gloves. He also carried extra rounds of ammunition on his person.

A search of his Mercedes SUV yielded even more items. Police found a Kevlar helmet inside the vehicle. They also discovered a gas mask in the car. These items suggest a high level of preparation for a confrontation. Chief Sullivan praised the vigilance of the standing guard. “Who knows what could have happened without them,” he remarked.

Current Investigation and Ongoing Safety

The motives for this brazen act remain unclear. The 18-year-old suspect does not live in the D.C. area. He was not previously known to the Capitol Police force.

Both chambers of Congress are currently out of session this week. This means fewer people were on the grounds during the event. Police cleared the immediate area to ensure public safety. The grounds have since reopened to the public and staff.

Authorities believe the man acted alone in this incident. There are no other suspects being sought at this time. No ongoing threat to the community exists right now. Investigations into the suspect’s background will continue throughout the week. This event highlights the constant risks at the nation’s capital.
