Novak Djokovic Reaches Australian Open Semis

Novak Djokovic advanced to the Australian Open semi-finals on Wednesday in dramatic fashion. His opponent, Lorenzo Musetti, retired hurt while leading.

Musetti Dominates Early Sets

Lorenzo Musetti played the match of his life for two full sets. He dominated the baseline against the World No. 1.

Musetti took the first set 6-4 with incredible passing shots. He then doubled his lead by winning the second set 6-3.

Novak Djokovic struggled to find his rhythm and looked destined for defeat. He repeatedly tried to shorten points by rushing the net.

Novak Djokovic Struggles with Blisters

The Serbian legend dealt with his own physical issues during the match. He required a medical timeout for painful blisters.

His right foot was heavily taped by the tournament physio. Djokovic winced in pain and spent time stretching between points.

He managed to break Musetti early in the third set. However, the momentum shifted due to a sudden injury.

A Cruel Ending for Musetti

At 1-1 in the third set, Musetti’s movement suddenly failed. He stopped running for balls due to a thigh injury.

The Italian called for a medical timeout but could not continue. He retired while leading the match two sets to one.

“He should have been the winner today,” Djokovic admitted afterwards. It was a lucky escape for the defending champion.

Path to the Semi-Finals

This marks the second time Novak Djokovic benefited from a withdrawal this week. He previously received a walkover in the fourth round.

Djokovic now moves closer to another Grand Slam title in Melbourne. He will face his next opponent in the semi-finals on Friday.

For Musetti, the loss is devastating for his career-high ranking hopes. He missed his first hard-court Grand Slam semi-final.
